- Flu vaccination is not covered by Japanese health insurance and is paid out of pocket. Some wards subsidise it for residents over 65 — ask us.

When to Get It

Flu season in Japan runs from roughly December to March, with cases usually peaking in January and February. It takes about two weeks after the injection for protection to build, so late October to early December is the window most people aim for.
Later is still worth it
If you have left it until January, it is still worth having. The season often runs into March, and vaccination during the season is normal practice.

What Happens on the Day
Before the injection
We check your temperature and go through a short set of questions: whether you are unwell today, whether you have had a reaction to a vaccine before, and whether you have an egg allergy. You can answer in English. Bring photo ID, and your residence card if you have one.
We cannot vaccinate you if
- You have a clear fever, usually 37.5°C or above
- You are unwell with an acute illness
- You have had anaphylaxis to this vaccine before
- The doctor judges it unsuitable for another reason
If you are not sure whether any of these apply to you, come in and ask rather than deciding on your own.
Side effects that can occur
- Pain, redness or swelling where you were injected
- Fever, tiredness, headache — usually mild and gone within a few days
- Rarely, a rash
Anaphylaxis immediately after an injection is very rare but possible, so we keep you in the clinic for a short observation period. If you develop a high fever, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash after you get home, call us on 03-6824-4126.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Japanese health insurance?
No. Flu vaccination is paid out of pocket whether or not you are insured here, so having no Japanese insurance makes no difference to what you pay.
Can I walk in, or do I have to book?
Both work. Booking means less waiting, and it also means we can be sure we have doses on the day. In November and December we get busy, so booking is worth it.
Can you write a certificate in English?
Yes. We issue vaccination certificates in English, and we can complete a form supplied by your school or employer. Bring the form with you.
I had a flu shot in my home country this year. Do I need another?
It depends on when you had it and which strains it covered. Northern and southern hemisphere formulations differ. Tell us the date and the country and we will talk it through.
Can my child be vaccinated here?
Yes. Under 13 the course is two doses, spaced two to four weeks apart. Tell us your child’s age when you book.
I am pregnant. Can I have a flu shot?
Influenza vaccine is not a live vaccine and is generally given during pregnancy, but the timing is a clinical decision. Tell us how many weeks you are and we will discuss it.
