Testing without symptoms is not covered by Japanese health insurance and is paid out of pocket. If you have symptoms, some of it may be covered — we will tell you which.

Why the Throat Swab Matters

This is the usual reason a test comes back clear when something is still there.

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are usually tested from urine, or from a vaginal swab. That finds an infection of the genitals. It does not find one in the throat.

Throat infections are common after oral sex and very often cause no symptoms at all, so there is nothing to prompt you to test. If there has been oral exposure, a urine test on its own can miss it. That is why Standard 6 exists and why most people take it.

You collect the urine sample yourself. The throat swab takes a few seconds. If a vaginal swab is more appropriate, you can collect it yourself as well.

When to Test

Testing too early is the other reason a result can be wrong.

Every test needs time after exposure before it can pick anything up, and that time is different for each infection. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea show up relatively quickly. HIV and syphilis take longer, and the exact window depends on which test is used.

So the useful thing to bring is a date. Tell us roughly when the exposure was and we will tell you what can be tested reliably today, and what is worth repeating later. If it is too early for one of them, we will say so rather than sell you a test that cannot answer your question yet.

Come in sooner, not later, if

You have discharge, pain when you urinate, sores, a rash or swollen glands
A partner has told you they tested positive
You are leaving Japan soon and want the result before you go
The condom broke, or there was no condom

How It Works

On the day

You see a doctor first. We ask what happened and when, whether you have symptoms, and what you want tested. The conversation is in English and it is short. Then we take the samples. Most people are in and out inside half an hour.

If you already have symptoms

The doctor may start treatment on the day rather than wait for results. That is normal practice when the picture is clear enough, and it matters if you are leaving Japan shortly. Treatment is usually antibiotics, given as tablets or by injection or drip depending on what is being treated.

Getting your results

Samples go to an outside laboratory, so results take a few days. We tell you how you will receive them before you leave. If you have already left Japan by then, we can still reach you — tell us how.

If something comes back positive

We explain what it means, treat it, and tell you when it is safe to have sex again. Most of what is on this page is straightforward to treat. We can also write the result and the treatment in English if you need to show it to a doctor at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Japanese health insurance?

No. Testing without symptoms is paid out of pocket whether or not you are insured here. If you have symptoms, part of the visit may be covered by insurance if you have it — we will tell you which applies to you.

Is it confidential?

Yes. What you tell us and what we find stays between you and the clinic. We do not contact your employer, your school or your embassy.

Can I be tested with no symptoms at all?

Yes, and it is the usual reason people come. Many of these infections cause no symptoms, particularly in the throat, so having none tells you very little on its own.

Can I get the result before I leave Japan?

Tell us your departure date when you book. Samples go to an outside laboratory and take a few days, so it depends on how long you have. If it is too tight, we will say so and arrange to send the result to you instead.

Can you write the result in English?

Yes. We issue results and medical letters in English, which is what you will need if you want a doctor at home to follow up.

My partner also wants to be tested. Can we come together?

Yes. Testing both of you at the same time is sensible, because treating one person and not the other leads back to where you started. Tell us when you book so we can plan the visit.
