EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION
Morning-After Pill in Tokyo
Seen the same day, in English, at a clinic open every day of the year. The sooner you take it, the better it works.
Come in today if you can. Emergency contraception is most effective the sooner it is taken after unprotected sex, and it can still be used up to 72 hours after. If you are near that limit, call us rather than waiting for a reply to an online form.
What It Costs
| Item | Details | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency contraceptive pill | Consultation and the tablet, taken here | ¥00,000 |
| Pregnancy test | Where the timing makes it necessary | ¥0,000 |
| STI testing | Optional, on the STD testing page | ¥00,000 |
- A first-visit fee of ¥0,000 is charged on top.
- This is paid out of pocket. Japanese health insurance does not cover it.
- We accept credit cards. We do not take cash.
- Bring a photo ID. A residence card, passport or Japanese driving licence is fine.
How It Works
The pill works mainly by delaying ovulation, so that no egg is released while sperm are still able to fertilise one. That is why timing matters so much: once ovulation has already happened, it has far less to work with.
It is not an abortion pill. It does not end an existing pregnancy and it will not harm one. These are different medications for different situations, and the confusion between them stops people coming in.
It is also not a guarantee. It reduces the chance of pregnancy considerably but does not remove it, which is why we ask you to test if your next period is late.
What happens at the visit
- We ask when it happenedThe number of hours changes what we recommend
- We ask about your cycle and any medicationA few drugs interfere with how it works
- You take the tablet hereNot something you take away and take later
- We tell you what to expectIncluding when to test and when to come back
The whole visit is usually under 30 minutes. We do not need a reason and we do not ask for one.
Afterwards
- Nausea is the common side effectIf you vomit within about two hours, contact us — the dose may not have been absorbed
- Your next period may come early or lateA shift of a week either way is not unusual
- Take a pregnancy test if it is more than a week lateThis is the part people skip
- You are not protected for the rest of the cycleIt covers what already happened, not what comes next. Use condoms until your next period
- Consider testing for infectionsEmergency contraception does nothing about STIs. Most need two to four weeks before a test is reliable
If you find yourself needing this more than occasionally, it is worth talking about regular contraception instead. It is more reliable, cheaper over time and easier on your body. We can point you to a gynaecology clinic that works in English.
Frequently Asked Questions
How late is too late?
It can be used up to 72 hours after unprotected sex, and it works better the earlier it is taken. If you are past that window, still come in — there are other options to discuss, and a pregnancy test may be the right next step.
Do I need an appointment?
Booking helps us keep the visit short, but do not let it delay you. We are open every day of the year, including weekends and public holidays. Call if the timing is tight.
Will anyone be told?
No. We do not contact your family, your partner, your school or your employer. What happens here stays here.
Can I come if I am under 20?
Yes, you can be seen. Bring photo ID. Depending on your age we may talk with you about involving a parent or guardian, but you will not be turned away.
Do I need Japanese health insurance?
No. This is paid out of pocket whether you have insurance or not, so not having a card changes nothing.
Is this an abortion pill?
No. It works by delaying ovulation and has no effect on an existing pregnancy. They are different medications used in different situations.
